These are the clearest views of Saturn’s moon Titan we’ve seen yet

Long live Cassini, which has delivered the clearest views of Saturn’s moon, Titan, to date. Six infrared images of Titan have been captured by the noble Cassini spacecraft, which, after 13 years of exploration, finally (and sadly) burned up in Saturn’s atmosphere in September 2017. 2018 is only halfway over, but a troubling climate change trend is already apparent

Earth is in the midst of a 40-year-long accelerated warming trend spurred on by human-caused climate change, and 2018 isn’t helping. Scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and Columbia University showed this week that the average surface temperature on Earth between January and June this year was the third hottest half-year on...CONTINUE READING

The return of supersonic planes could mean serious pollution problems

Supersonic travel died out in 2003, when the last 100-passenger Concorde jet settled down on a London runway. The costly planes were doomed by their speed: The jets created sonic booms when they broke the 767 mph sound barrier, sending thunderous rumbles to the land below. For this reason, supersonic planes have long been banned...CONTINUE READING

Grim space photo shows the horror of demolishing forests

While orbiting some 250 miles above Madagascar this week, International Space Station astronaut Ricky Arnold captured a grim picture of the island’s decimated land.  Madagascar’s forests have been nearly logged to death, with nearly 90 percent of its original forests destroyed in the last century, according to NASA.  SEE ALSO: 8 perfect astronaut selfies for...CONTINUE READING

A NASA prototype could save the lives of firefighters as blazes erupt in western U.S.

Nearly 40 large wildfires now burn across the United States.  Blazes are expected this time of year, with hot air, dry land, and gusty winds stoking big fires throughout the western U.S. But today, twice as much land is burned than in the early 1980s, when the U.S. Forest Service started keeping good fire records...CONTINUE READING

Listen to Saturn interact with its moon Enceladus in deep space

A planet and its moon are getting chatty in deep space.  A new video from NASA shows off the complicated interactions between plasma waves moving from Saturn to its moon Enceladus and back.  The new video, produced by converting plasma wave data into sound waves, shows that the plasma actually moves along magnetic field lines,...CONTINUE READING

This ‘skin’ could be the future of how we live in space

MIT researcher Carson Smuts is thinking about life in zero-gravity where the traditional rules of architecture do not apply. With the help of City Science and the Space Exploration Initiative, his project Spatial Flux looks into the future of architecture as the Earth gets more crowded and humans spend more time in space.  Read more…More...CONTINUE READING
